The Best Cotton Bath Towels (After Six Months and 100 Washes)

Nine sets, 100 wash cycles, two of which we did wrong on purpose. The best towel is dense, dries fast, and doesn't get a sour smell at month four.

Verdict

If you've ever wondered why your towels smell a little off by month three, the answer is GSM and weave.

+ What we liked

  • 650+ GSM with a long-staple Turkish cotton hand
  • Dries fast — 6 hours air-dry on a standard towel rack
  • No sour smell after 100 wash cycles

− What could be better

  • !Heavy when wet
  • !Color options are limited

Towel reviews tend to be aspirational. We tested on the assumption you'll wash these towels approximately a thousand times in the next decade. Six months and 100 wash cycles later, here's what we learned.

Our pick

A 650 GSM long-staple Turkish cotton bath towel that hits the sweet spot of plush-feel without being so dense it fails to dry between uses. We air-dried each test towel on a standard rack — our pick was bone dry at the 6-hour mark, which is the threshold where mildew growth meaningfully picks up. It also retained its loft (we measured pile height before and after) better than any towel we tested.

What we'd skip

Anything labeled "1000 GSM" or higher. We tested two and both retained moisture overnight, smelled sour by month four, and required twice the dryer time. Plush is not the same as good.

The bottom line

Buy a 600–700 GSM long-staple cotton towel. Wash it weekly in hot. Air-dry on a rack between uses. Your towels will outlast your kitchen renovation.

Three months of ownership. The 'set and forget' aspect is real — I genuinely don't think about this thing on a daily basis.

Year-and-a-half of ownership here. The button labels have worn off but otherwise it's been bulletproof.

Worth noting — the warranty terms changed slightly between when I bought mine and now. Not a dealbreaker but worth checking before you click buy.

Bought ours last week on the strength of this review. Two days in, fully agree on the headline. Quiet enough that I can run it before 7 a.m. without waking my partner.
