Away vs. Monos vs. Paravel: A Real-World Carry-On Showdown
Three direct-to-consumer carry-ons, six months on the road. Functionally close; not interchangeable. Here's how each one is different in ways the marketing doesn't tell you.
Buy the one that's on sale and matches your aesthetic.
+ What we liked
- ✓All three are well-built hard-shell polycarbonate
- ✓All three offer reasonable warranties
- ✓All three roll smoothly on smooth surfaces
− What could be better
- !Away's wheels are noticeably louder
- !Monos's interior compression strap is undersized
- !Paravel's handle has more flex than we'd like
Three direct-to-consumer carry-ons, six months on the road, identical packing lists, identical itineraries. Here's how they actually differ.
Away
The grandfather. Solid build, the most retail presence (you can buy one at the airport in a pinch), customer service is genuinely good. The wheels are slightly louder than Monos and Paravel; not a dealbreaker but you'll notice in a quiet hotel hallway.
Monos
The aesthetic favorite. Slightly nicer fit and finish, slightly lighter empty weight, slightly less polished interior. The compression strap is short.
Paravel
The lightest of the three (3.0 kg empty vs. 3.4 kg for Away). The handle has more flex, which we noticed but didn't mind. The interior is the most thoughtful of the three.
The verdict
These are functionally near-identical bags. Buy whichever one you like the look of, ideally on sale. The 5% differences in weight, wheel noise, and handle stiffness are not worth obsessing over.

Three months of ownership. The 'set and forget' aspect is real — I genuinely don't think about this thing on a daily basis.

Year-and-a-half of ownership here. The button labels have worn off but otherwise it's been bulletproof.

Worth noting — the warranty terms changed slightly between when I bought mine and now. Not a dealbreaker but worth checking before you click buy.

Bought ours last week on the strength of this review. Two days in, fully agree on the headline. Quiet enough that I can run it before 7 a.m. without waking my partner.

The 'what we'd skip' section is gold. Wish more reviewers were willing to call out duds.

Disagree slightly. Mine has been in the rotation for a year and the surface coating is starting to show wear. Worth knowing before you buy.

Mine arrived with a minor cosmetic defect. Took two emails but got a replacement, no return needed.

Honest review, thank you. The price has come down ~$60 since launch and at this price it's genuinely a no-brainer.
